The School of Law at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa campus is organising an online movie screening and a panel discussion on “Genocide as a Violation of Human Rights: Revisiting Rwanda” on April 7, 2021.
The Rwandan Genocide is one of the worst incidences of crimes against humanity and war crimes in recent history. In a span of three months during the summer of 1994 more than 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in Rwanda. The international community by and large, stood by as this genocide occurred due to the unwillingness of member states to reach on a consensus in providing military aid and support to end this violence.
The movie screening and panel discussion will focus on the international history of genocide with a particular emphasis on the origin of the Rwandan Genocide. By analysing the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide the panelists will also deliberate on how hate speech and xenophobic practises, policies and laws contribute towards creating an intolerant and polarised environment in any State. Discussions will focus on the efforts initiated post conflict under international humanitarian and human rights law by the United Nations that were aimed at justice, reconciliation and reconstruction in Rwanda. The Panel Discussion includes the following speakers:
1. Dr. Sunil John (Faculty Member)
2. Dr. Salu D’Souza (Faculty Member)
3. Koshika Krishna (Faculty Member)
4. Chhavi Pathak (Student Representative).
