Department

Overview

The field of Digital Humanities allows for reframing traditional literature through the lens of a contemporary society that has become increasingly reliant on digital technologies. Our culture has become one that is multimodal, blending audio, video and text into a new genre of literature entirely. The Department of Languages, in congruence with its vision and mission, seeks to decode this new digital genre. The Department offers its students the tools to navigate a literary landscape where the lines between movies, novels, web series, video games and more have become increasingly blurred.

The academic programs offered by the Department, in alignment with the University’s vision and mission, help shape students into responsible and socially aware students that can navigate a world where the boundaries between literature, culture and technology are constantly shifting. Students will be introduced to the concept of remediation and a look at digital texts and their importance. They will be taught to draw comparisons between classic literature and modern digital texts such as vlogs, streams and video games. Students will be assigned novels and papers at the intersection of technology and literature. Although there will be a greater focus on the literary aspects, students will be familiarised with tools that are key to Digital Humanities, such as ATLAS Ti, WordSeer, Twine, etc. The course's interdisciplinary nature allows students to take up a career in various fields, ranging from technical writers and data journalists to digital curators.

Message

from the HOD

“The digital approach to literature and language opens up a plethora of possibilities for students.”

Literature and language shape society in various ways by exploring what it is to be human. It is also the most effective way to understand the culture. Most of the biggest questions could be answered by drawing on literature, language, culture and technology. The Department of Languages provides an interdisciplinary platform to its students where they can learn, share, and apply cutting-edge methods to integrate and interrogate traditional literature and contemporary society. The department offers a Master of Arts in English with Digital Humanities. The programme focuses on developing an advanced understanding of digital methodologies relevant to research, culture and information sectors. Its unique curriculum helps the students deepen their understanding of cultural practices in the digital age.
With its progressive and innovative approach towards the literary field, students will be well-equipped to navigate the digital literary landscape. The digital approach to literature and language opens up a plethora of possibilities for students. In addition, projects, internships, and dissertations provide them with experiential learning opportunities.
