Who we are

CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was born out of the educational vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara, an educationist and social reformer of the nineteenth century in South India. He founded the first Catholic indigenous congregation, Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), in 1831, which administers CHRIST (Deemed to be University).

Established in 1969 as Christ College, it pioneered efforts in Indian higher education by introducing novel and modern curriculum, emphasising academic discipline, providing Holistic Education, and adopting global higher education methods with the help of a creative and devoted faculty.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India conferred Autonomy to Christ College in 2004 and identified it as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006. In 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India declared the institution Deemed to be University, in the name and style of CHRIST (Deemed to be University). CHRIST (Deemed to be University) is one of the first institutions in India to be accredited in 1998 by the NAAC, and subsequently, in 2004 and 2016, has the top grade 'A' on the 4-point scale.

Centre for Social Action (CSA)

The Centre for Social Action (CSA) is CHRIST's development arm (Deemed to be University). CSA was founded in 1999 to organise social awareness programmes for students and to carry out community development initiatives for underprivileged areas. It is a student-led movement for a more compassionate and equitable society, with children at the forefront. Child rights, socioeconomic development of women, youth, and farmers, community mobilisation, and environmental/climate change concerns are all addressed by CSA.

As a component of CHRIST (Deemed to be University), CSA concentrates mostly on student communities and their awareness of numerous concerns affecting society's impoverished and disenfranchised parts. This activity is conducted to enable long-term improvements in the lives of the impoverished and oppressed through active student community involvement, as well as to provide students with principles and values for successful societal contributions. CSA was established to help the student body instill the ideals of social responsibility envisioned in CHRIST's core values, vision, and purpose (Deemed to be University).

CSA believes in empowering the student community to effect constructive social change. This was one of the driving causes behind the establishment of CSA and continues to be a motivating element for numerous development initiatives and social sensitization programmes. CSA's goal is to build a community of compassionate students who will seek to improve society.

Student Learders

CSA selects student leaders each year using a unique selection procedure. These student leaders of different wings and initiatives assist the activities of the following academic year. The wing leaders greet the fresh batch of volunteers for the year and organise events to integrate them into the community. Throughout the year, wing leaders arrange events based on the goals of their wings and work with other wings.
