The Department of English and Cultural Studies at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Pune Lavasa Campus is a vibrant academic hub committed to excellence in teaching, transformative research, and creative inquiry. Rooted in humanities and forward looking in vision, our department nurtures literary sensibilities, linguistic proficiency, critical thinking, and imaginative reasoning, while fostering socio-cultural awareness in a rapidly evolving digital world.
At the heart of our academic offerings is the flagship postgraduate program—MA in English with Digital Humanities—a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary initiative that seamlessly integrates advanced digital methodologies with the study of literature, cinema, and culture. This pioneering curriculum draws from literature, science and technology, media studies, management, and the social sciences, offering students a comprehensive, digitally empowered approach to humanistic inquiry.
The program emphasizes Computational Literary Studies and digital tools that revolutionize textual interpretation, narrative analysis, and cultural data visualization. It is uniquely designed to extend beyond the traditional literary canon, positioning students at the cutting edge of Game Studies and Anime Studies. These specialized modules invite students to critically engage with interactive narratives, gameplay mechanics, fan cultures, media aesthetics, and the socio-political dimensions of visual storytelling—from indie games to the richly symbolic worlds of Japanese anime.
Signature digital initiatives such as Mapping Lavasa, a collaborative electronic literature project, allow students to apply multimodal storytelling techniques and spatial humanities approaches in real-world contexts. These digital humanities projects foster creativity, technical fluency, and scholarly rigor.
If you are passionate about literature, fascinated by anime and games, and eager to explore the cultural logic of our media-saturated world, the Department of English and Cultural Studies welcomes you to a journey of intellectual exploration and interdisciplinary excellence.
The Department of English and Cultural Studies at Christ University, Lavasa, reimagines the study of literature for the digital age through its pioneering MA in English with Digital Humanities. Positioned at the intersection of literary studies, data analytics, and cultural theory, the program embraces a future-oriented pedagogy that expands both the scope and method of English Studies.
Specializing in Computational Literary Studies, this first-of-its-kind program in India explores how literature, in its evolving forms—including anime, games studies, cinema, graphic narratives, music, and digital texts—can be studied through the analytical power of text mining, sentiment analysis, and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Literature is no longer limited to the printed page; our students engage with storytelling in its multimodal forms, learning to treat popular culture artifacts as rich literary and cultural texts.
As Lavasa emerges as a hub of analytics and innovation, the programme leverages this data-rich environment to equip students with cutting-edge tools such as Voyant Tools, Twine, CATMA, ATLAS.ti, and Python-based text analysis. These platforms allow students to practice distant reading—a methodological shift from close textual interpretation to broader, data-informed literary patterns. Data visualization becomes a lens through which literature reveals new cultural, political, and historical dynamics, giving students a novel angle to study themes, narratives, and stylistics across corpora.
Rooted in the vision of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aligned with Sustainable Development Goals for inclusive, high-quality education, our curriculum fosters multidisciplinary learning, digital fluency, and critical cultural inquiry. It prepares students to think globally, work interdisciplinarily, and engage deeply with contemporary debates on media, identity, and representation.
Graduates of this program are not only well-versed in literary and cultural theory but are also equipped for impactful careers as data journalists, computational linguists, digital curators, AI-driven content analysts, and cultural researchers. They emerge as professionals capable of bridging the gap between humanities and technology—innovators who understand culture through both the lens of literature and the logics of data.
The MA in English with Digital Humanities stands as a unique offering of our department, championing a bold, inclusive, and globally resonant vision of what literature is and what it can become in the digital era.

To promote academic excellence and empowerment through teaching and research that fosters literary sensibilities, language competence, critical thinking, imaginative reasoning, and socio-political awareness in the contemporary digital world.

I visited CHRIST University, Lavasa Campus in order to interact with the faculty and students, mainly from the humanities, on the emerging discipline of Digital Humanities. I found both the students and teachers quite inquisitive and probing. I faced a lot of quality questions and enjoyed replying to all. The administration and the host department were quite cordial and they enthusiastically acquainted me with the academic plans and projects they plan to undertake. I was particularly impressed by the commitment of Dr Richa, the Head of the Department. The ambience, hospitality, and cordiality was par excellence! I would be happy to visit the campus again!
