Dear Christites,
Welcome to the School of Humanities and Performing Arts!
We are proud and thrilled to have you in our team. The school consists of the Department of English and Cultural Studies, the Department of Performing Arts, Theatre and Music, Department of Languages and Department of Theology and Philosophy. This school is the nurturing ground for academic engagements that blend the study of art, culture, literature, history and philosophy.
The school offers subjects that help you delve into inquiry and reasoning that goes beyond the written words. Delving deep in history, philosophy, critical studies, cultural studies, and more, this school takes the learner into a self- reflective journey. The moral and social responsibility of students of Humanities is to understand existing knowledge, reflect and question the past and the present, posit concepts and ideas to equate with contemporary times and construct new knowledge. You have this rare privilege of contributing to the thought system of the coming generation. Socrates, the great thinker and philosopher once said, “Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.” At CHRIST, we want you to propel the stagnant thoughts and rusted minds that have long forgotten the light of wisdom. Here is a place that provides you with opportunities to deliberate on ideas, question and debate, read and analyse, discuss and generate new propositions for a future that you would create.
Together may we learn to grow and contribute to the progress and development of the university and the society at large. Come engage yourself in deep learning and in honing your skills for a world that you would define!
In order to encourage the students to participate in departmental activities, our university gives access to students to make use of the multiple facilities provided in the campus.
I visited CHRIST University, Lavasa Campus in order to interact with the faculty and students, mainly from the humanities, on the emerging discipline of Digital Humanities. I found both the students and teachers quite inquisitive and probing. I faced a lot of quality questions and enjoyed replying to all. The administration and the host department were quite cordial and they enthusiastically acquainted me with the academic plans and projects they plan to undertake. I was particularly impressed by the commitment of Dr Richa, the Head of the Department. The ambience, hospitality, and cordiality was par excellence! I would be happy to visit the campus again!
I conducted two sessions with the faculty members and newly admitted students of the MA in English with Digital Humanities (MA EDH) programme at Christ University Lavasa. The first, on digital tools for creative writing, engaged faculty members, emphasizing open, AI-driven resources for improved classroom interaction. The second session was jointly conducted with my colleague at IIT Jodhpur where we deliberated diverse career prospects that may be offered to the MA EDH students, covering industry and academic/alt-academic options. Throughout, Dr. Richa Shristi and her team offered consistent support. Christ University Lavasa's MA in English with Digital Humanities programme is unique as its focuses on traditional literary studies reimagined through the DH lens, crucial in today's world. I congratulate Dr. Srishti's team for guiding learners towards new career opportunities and look forward to future collaborations.
I thoroughly enjoyed delivering a lecture on 'An Introduction to Text Mining' at Christ University. The MA in English in Digital Humanities at Christ is a promising program that reflects the needs of contemporary digital society and culture. The integration of DH in academic programs not only prepares students for the evolving landscape of the digital era but also contributes significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the humanities.
I find that the course extends beyond the conventional boundaries of Humanities studies, making it highly relevant to modern societal and professional contexts. The inventive curriculum design has pushed me beyond mere theoretical learning, involving me through diverse methods like storymapping and daily blog assignments, ensuring my continuous participation. I have been fortunate enough to be able to attend the frequent and innovative workshops of the course, which have been instrumental in solidifying my understanding, effectively showcasing the tangible influence of Humanities in real-world scenarios.
The course seamlessly blends English literature with digital tools, providing a deep understanding of both traditional literary concepts and modern digital methodologies. I have understood complex subjects through the incorporation of CIAs, which was simplified by infusing them with creative elements. Through tasks like multimedia presentations and digital storytelling, the program ensures that I, not only grasp theoretical concepts but also develop practical skills relevant to the digital age. This program not only gives me a hands-on knowledge of literature and digital humanities but also has also built creativity and critical thinking in my approach, through the innovative teaching methodologies.
