The Department of English and Cultural Studies hosts the launch of Non-Conforming Women in Neoliberal Cities: Re-thinking Female Empowerment in Contemporary Fiction and Film, authored by Dr. Shrimoyee Chattopadhyay, Assistant Professor of the department. The book presents an incisive exploration of the intersections between gender, migration, and urban space within the framework of neoliberal Western cities. Through an interdisciplinary approach, Dr. Chattopadhyay investigates how South Asian diasporic women negotiate identity, empowerment, and belonging in contemporary literature and cinema. Focusing on post-World War II migration to the UK and the US, the book examines how spatial and emotional displacement influence women’s experiences of trauma and transformation. By engaging with narratives of mobility, marginality, and resilience, Non-Conforming Women in Neoliberal Cities sheds light on the complex negotiations of female subjectivity in global urban contexts. The work makes a significant contribution to contemporary scholarship on feminism, diaspora studies, cultural modernity, and identity formation.
