Theatre in Management Education (TiME): Concept Note

“Applied drama and performative action is the telling of the truth in symbolic clothing.”

The influence of Drama in Leadership Education has gained significant momentum in recent years. In this course, literary devices, tools and techniques from Cinema and Theatre provide an action agenda for application in the context of Leadership Studies. Working through a form of storytelling which is both emotionally and cognitively compelling, cinema and theatrical art can bring in authentic engagement that blends with traditional classroom methods of learning and development. Literature, poetry and performance through dramatic expression create integrated dialogic interventions and distinctive change inducing interventions which emphasise the changing nature of leadership discourse that takes place in an organisational context.

This intervention methodology will enable students to reimagine images, narratives and situational constructs within the context of organisational leadership and culture. Learning through drama employs a sensibility which is highly creative, encourages inquiry led critical thinking, contextualises innovation and is free from coercive styles and techniques of learning. The course aims to encourage students to develop personal insights into leadership concepts, principles and behaviours through an action oriented cinematic and dramatic experience. This also brings in an appreciation of global culture and behaviours through a dramatic lens. This course is a specialisation elective course offered in the UG final year and PG courses.

On having completed this course, students should be able to critically reference and appreciate dramatic narratives to:

1. Critically examine contemporary Leadership concepts and Behavioural frameworks.

2. Evaluate the influence of leadership approaches on Organisational Culture and life cycle development.

3. Assess leadership strategies for advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) in organisations.

4. Critique the Psychological Foundations of leader behaviour and their impact on organisational performance.

5. Develop and apply Leadership Practices that enable organisations to thrive in an AI driven digital era and future workplace.

Drama places less emphasis on the “right” answer and more on experimentation and reflection. It creates a safe space to fail, review and improve, which makes the learning memorable and transferable. Assessment combines observation rubrics, peer feedback and reflective journals. It culminates in a capstone performance, such as a staged investor pitch or a simulated boardroom.

Expected Impact

TiME aims to produce graduates who are confident communicators, persuasive storytellers, effective team players and composed problem solvers. They will be managers who can both analyse a business situation and act on it. Organisations increasingly value creativity, adaptability and human centred leadership. TiME shapes strategic, ethically grounded and emotionally aware leaders for tomorrow.
