The Department of English and Cultural Studies organises a film screening of Bend it like Beckham as part of its academic engagement activities, moderated by Dr. Shrimoyee Chattopadhyay. The screening will be followed by an interactive discussion that contextualises the film within debates on diaspora, gender, migration, and cultural negotiation. Students will critically examine the protagonist’s negotiation of British-Asian identity, generational conflict, and everyday forms of resistance, reading the film as a narrative of postcolonial belonging in a multicultural metropolis.
The event is closely linked to the Postcolonial Digital Narratives course, where the film will be discussed as a pre-digital but foundational diasporic text that anticipates contemporary digital storytelling. Themes such as self-representation, visibility, and transnational identity are connected to present-day digital platforms like social media, online archives, and short- form video narratives. The screening encourages students to trace continuities between cinematic narratives and digital postcolonial expressions, fostering critical thinking about media, migration, and identity formation in global contexts.
